TOP PICKS FOR
      FOOD AND DRINK
      ON ST. THOMAS

      Restaurants, Waiter, Dining Out

By far, one of the best drinks on the Island is at Robert's American Bar at the Elysian Beach Resort. The bartender Page makes a frozen drink called a Fudgesicle. It is a true chocolate lover's dream and could turn anyone into an alcoholic! Page is also famous for his "Frozen Mango Tango" however the Fudgesicle really is great!

Upon returning to the Island in 2005, we came across a new crew running the poolside bar at Bluebeard's Castle. Now named "Harbor's Edge", new owners Chad Nehrboss & Pedro Vega have concocted a drink called the "BBC2". The World Famous Mountain Top has been know for years for its banana daquari. This new spin on a banana now takes top honors in the banana drink category. For those who want to know the ingredients, it has Baily's, Bananas, banana liquor, rum and Coco Lopez.

As for french fries on the Island there's been a debate as to the best. Many say Bonnie's @ the Elysian makes the best fries. I personally think that Rose at Harbors Edge wins that contest. I think the beach setting adds to Bonnie's fries, but on pure taste, I think Rose wins. You will find that occassionally in December on the Island, McDonald's (yes McDonald's) has a special edition french fry not available on the mainland. They are potato wedges in a seasoned garlic salt and they are extremely addicting. Unfortunately we have not seen them this year.

Speaking of McDonald's, they give a new meaning to the term "fast food". It can take up 20-35 minutes to go through a drive-through at the one by the Tutu mall and going inside to order is not much better. The one located in Frenchtown is the size of a trailer and takes forever. If you order the fish sandwich, it seems that the send the fisherman located behind them on the fish pier out to catch the fish as we have ordered, paid, and waited for as long as 45 minutes. There are also no dollar meals at any of the 3 McDonald's on the island.

A great local hangout with great deli style sandwiches is the Frenchtown Deli. My favorite is the "Hungry Viking" which on a multi-grain sub roll has smoked salmon, cream cheese, onions and capers.

Around the corner from the Deli is Betsy's Bar and Restaurant. This local bar has some of the best food on the island. The lobster alfredo is to die for and the ribs and steaks are cooked to perfection. The vegetables are unbelievable. Once you eat at at Betsy's, you'll come back time and time again. They feature live music, outside dining and a great place to hang out after eating with pool tables, pinball, fooseball and a really nice crowd. Probably the most down to earth crowd on the island! Be sure to bring cash as no credit cards or checks are accepted. Entres range from $15 to $20 and the portions are really filling. You will not leave hungry and the mud pie is as decadent as it gets.

For great happy hour eats and drinks there's the Green House on Main Street. 2 for 1 drinks and really cheap eats including wings, calamari, conch fritters and more. Stop in and say hi to Doug and tell him Eric & Sofia sent you.

At Bluebeard's Castle there are a couple of restaurants. My favorite is the "Room With A View". Features the freshest seafood, chicken and steak on the island and the place has a great view of the harbor and downtown Charlotte Amalie.

For a great Sunday buffet breakfast, there's the Ritz Carlton with all you can eat lobster, jumbo shrimp, king crab legs, oysters and more. It's a bit pricey at $55 per person but the presentation and taste is worth every penny!
